Lash Extension FAQs

Lash Extensions vs. Temporary Lashes

Temporary lashes are offered as strips, clusters, or individuals. They are typically applied to the lash line and are not recommended for wear over 24 hours. Temporary lashes can be customized by length, style, and thickness - but there are limits. They are a great option for someone that is looking to enhance their eyes for a special occasion and there is little commitment involved.

Lash extensions are offered as "classics" or "volumes". They are applied by gluing a single synthetic lash or cluster of lashes to a single natural lash. The process is much more extensive and long-lasting, as the adhesive is stronger, a full set of lash extensions can last 6-8 weeks. They are also more customizable, with more of a variety of lengths, curls, and densities. The technician can also personalize the style in which they are applied to suit your eye shape and preference. This is a great option for someone that can appreciate the daily look of enhanced lashes.

Classics vs. Volumes

Classic lash extensions are the traditional method of application. The process involves securing one single lash extension to a single natural lash. This results in a very natural "mascara-like" effect.

Volume lash extensions involve securing multiple ultra-fine extensions to a single natural lash, resulting in fuller, more glamorous effect.

Lash Styles

One of the many benefits of lash extensions is the ability to fully customize your lash look! In addition to deciding between classics or volumes, extensions are also offered in a range of curls, lengths, and densities. Typically, your lash stylist will offer recommendations based on your consultation.

Choosing your lash curl can be dependent on how dramatic of an effect you desire, as well as your natural lash curl and eye shape. For example, someone with hooded eyes typically does best with L-curl extensions while someone with round eyes might find a B-curl lash more flattering. While this all might sound a bit confusing, your technician can help you make the best choice for your desired result.

Furthermore, you have the ability to choose an appropriate design - such as cat eye (longer at the outer corners) or doll eye (for a wide-eyed effect).

Time & Maintenance

You can expect your initial application to take about 2 hours. The technician will take this time to ensure 100+ individual extensions are applied to healthy, eligible natural lashes. As previously mentioned, a full set can last 6-8 weeks with proper care. They will shed gradually with your natural eyelashes.

To maintain your desired look and fullness, you will need to schedule fills every 2-4 weeks. These appointments typically take a fraction of the time (1-1.5 hours), at which point your technician will remove any overgrown or askew extensions and fill in sparse areas.

Following each appointment, you will want to avoid getting your lashes wet for 24 hours. You also want to avoid using any oil-based products around your eyes, as they can loosen the glue and cause your lash extension to shed quicker. Although it is recommended to avoid oil-based eye makeup remover, it is still important to keep your lashes and eyelids clean! Frequently brushing your lashes with a clean mascara wand is also encouraged, to keep your lashes separated and in place.

The Pros & Cons (in a nutshell)

While lash extensions can be a convenient option for some, there are also risk to take into consideration. If you are prone to allergies, you may want to opt for a "patch test" to determine if you're a good candidate. While uncommon, some people may have sensitivities or reactions to the products used.

Extensions also require a great deal of time and commitment. They are an investment, and while choosing extensions for your special event is not discouraged, you may decided it is not the best value for you.

With that being said, I highly recommend considering eyelash extenstions if you can appreciate the convenince they can bring on a daily basis. You may feel you require no mascara, less eye makeup, or no makeup at all! They can be a great advantage if you plan on taking an extended vacation or honeymoon.

Ultimately, there's no price tag for having that "I woke up like this" confidence, and having beautiful lashes could be just the key!

Wow, I had no idea that lash extensions had the possibility to have so many options with things like volume, density, curl, and length. I have been thinking about getting lash extensions for a while now, but I had no idea what it really entailed. Thank you for the article, I feel a lot better about getting this procedure done and I bet it will look great!

That is nice that eyelash extensions can bring in more convenience on a daily basis. Maybe it would be good to get some eyelash extensions since they are convenient. This is something I am sure my wife would want to look into so she didn't have to do as much upkeep on her eyelashes.

It's good to know that lash extensions last longer than temporary lashes, My daughter wants some fake eyelashes for a school dance that she has coming up. She wants them to last a long time, but she doesn't know what her different options are. I'll pass this information along to her so that she is aware of eyelash extensions.
